Frequently asked questions
Wondering what the difference is between counselling and therapy, or what even happens in a session? You're in the right place!
The terms counselling and psychotherapy are used interchangeably. However, counselling is generally seen as shorter-term work (over weeks or months) that may focus on a specific issue. Psychotherapy tends to take a deeper look into you, and can happen over months or years. There is no set rule for our sessions, it's whatever suits you at the time and headspace you're in.
There is no 'right way' to do therapy! It's a conversation between you and me, at your pace. Yourself is enough.
Sessions are 50-minutes long.
Studies show that therapeutic work is most beneficial on a weekly basis. However, I am happy to accommodate fortnightly sessions. We will set out a space that it entirely yours, on the same date and time each week. Consistency is also important for the therapeutic relationship. If you do have shift patterns or other demands in life that may make this consistency difficult, don't hesistate to reach out and we can chat about what may be possible.
My session fee is £40. Sessions are paid 48 hours ahead via bank transfer.
At this time, I offer sessions online only. I will provide you with a secure Google Meet link. If you are Bristol (UK) based, I can offer walk and talk sessions (weather dependent!) in the BS3 area.
If you decide you'd like to work with me, I then encourage you to stay with the process for at least six sessions. We can then review how it's going. If we've been working together longer, and you'd like to stop therapy, we will have some sessions to wind down the process and work through closing the therapeutic relationship, as endings can bring up things we may not realise.
Sessions are confidential. I am a registered member of the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy, and I follow the ethical framework. Therapists are encouraged to have regular supervision with a qualified supervisor ( 1:1 or in a group setting) to make sure we are giving you the best care and that our own 'stuff' is not being transfered into the therapeutic relationship. All participants in this group are also bound by confidentiality, and I will only ever refer to you in a non-identifiable way.
